Heritage Day Celebration 2011

For Heritage Day this year, Angi decided to surprise Damien with something "African-flavoured" to celebrate.  After much searching, she found a restaurant in Greenside, Johannesburg which looked fantastic!  So, she told Damien to get ready to go out for dinner and directed him where to go.

Greenside has a vibe to it that is difficult to put in words - it is full of cultural differences!  Arriving at Mamma's Shebeen, the decor that greeted us was all "truly South African" based memorabilia and even the table was painted with a huge Bovril logo on it!  The walls were painted with probably the most famous South African icon ever - Nelson Mandela!  While we were waiting for our food, a man selling paintings came around to talk us into buying a Bob Marley painting - it now hangs in our lounge.

For starters, we enjoyed "Thabo's marrow bones" with bread.  Mains consisted of "Zee's beef stew", pap and veggies for Angi and "Soweto Lamb Chops" and pap for Damien.  After dinner, the atmosphere livened upon the arrival of groups of students who obviously frequent the many restaurants that line Greenway Street.
